Hopefully, this website will provide some insight into the patent system of the United Stated, and intellectual property system worldwide generally, that cannot be found otherwise.

  • Click on the 'EDUCATION' hyperlink above to learn about how patents contribute directly to education in various ways. Patents teach us about society's needs and how society has attempted to address those needs. Patents provide a historical context of how society has found ways to solve problems encountered in addressing such needs. Class 426, for example, covers methods related to food technology, satisfying the need for sustenance.

  • To learn about search queries, a search report structure and coverage of the search layout, click the 'SEARCH' hyperlink above. The "search query" is the manner in which the searcher interacts or communicates with the device containing the database.

  • To learn about historical aspects of patents, as well as historical technological milestones, impacts on society and everyday life, click the 'HISTORY' hyperlink above. The history of how society has solved its many problems in a technological manner is contained in patent documents and can provide a vector to anticipate and prepare for the future.

  • To learn about classification systems and their foundational aspects relative to information management, including taxonomy, ontology, database query structure, syntax, database limitations, click the 'ORGANIZATION' hyperlink above. The classification schemes provide the framework upon which subject matter contained in the patent documents is organized. It must be continually updated as technology changes and as the needs of society change or as new problems arise that must be solved.

  • To learn about patent 'reliability', 'patent search quality', and prediction of technology advancement, e.g., drift toward particular complementary technology, combination of uncommercialized or unconventional technology of differing fields, recent court decisions, proposed and new legislation, etc., click the 'PREDICTION' hyperlink above. Indices and "measurements" of patent quality are collected and analyzed by various organizations, including the THREE major patent offices: US, EU and JP. The Danish Patent Office has produced a software program that attempts to "valuate" an active patent document. This program is now available from ep.espacenet.com and is called IPScore. There are plenty of companies that provide various "patent analytics" services. Also, there is a merchant banking company called Ocean Tomo, listed on the NYSE, that performs public auctions of patent, trademark and copyright portfolios, using their own evaluation process to determine when a portfolio has sufficient market value to be auctioned. The "Ocean Tomo 300 Patent Index" lists companies on the NYSE that have market capitalizations based largely on patent portfolios.

  • To learn about the importance of logic, (e.g., first order mathematical) in the layout of searches, in the interpretation of claim recitations, analogousness, comparison, significance, etc., click the 'LOGIC' hyperlink above. Metaphors and ways to compare information is part of the field of Logic.

  • To learn about the methodology involved in writing a thorough and robust patent application (for filing with the USPTO), click the 'APPLICATION' hyperlink above. I will be writing a patent application that will be posted on this web site, for your review.

  • To learn about prosecution of patent applications, and the effect of a thorough patent search and patent application on the progress and outcome of prosecution, click on the 'PROSECUTION' hyperlink above. Patent "prosecution" begins when the patent examiner, i.e., the person who is employed by the legitimate governing body, will make the determination on whether the application will eventually issue into a true "Patent". The "prosecution" phase of the lifecycle of a patent application ends when either: the application is issued into a Patent, or the application is abandoned.

  • To learn about litigation of patents, and the effect of a thorough patent search and patent application on the phases and outcome of litigation, particularly in which the validity of an issued patent is being challenged, click on the 'LITIGATION' hyperlink above. Litigation involves challenges to existing patents in the Court system.
