An inventor can choose to apply for a patent in any country, but must follow the laws and regulations that pertain to that country in obtain protection for their invention. In Europe, an inventor can apply for a European Patent and choose coverage for all 27 countries that form the European Union. On the other hand, if the inventor chooses to have protection only in the United States, then she can apply for a patent at the USPTO. The more countries in which patent protection is sought, the higher the cost.
